The new designated training
area on skier’s right of the T-bar has been set up for a month or so now and
our coaches and athletes have been making good use of the fenced-off area and
the new wireless timing equipment. “The
new training area has been great – I feel more comfortable that the athletes
and the public are safer with us having our own fenced off area for training,”
exclaimed Head Coach Sean Valentine.
“Several teams from the Okanagan and Kootenays have
expressed interest in coming here to train on our facility over Spring Break, ”
said RMR Future Facilities Director Dave Muffly. Many thanks to Columbia Basin Trust for granting us
funding to purchase equipment for the training area and to Red Mountain
Resorts for allowing us to set up the area.
Thanks to RMR Fundraising Director Marten Kruysse, our
club has a place at the money trough in the new local Bingo! palace. The new hall has a non-smoking policy, which is welcome news to all the cardholder
athlete parents who get to spend 4 nights each there over the next 6 months or
so. The local bingo aficionados are
starting to file into the Eldorado Hall, but it’s going to take a while to get
the nightly “take” up to where we’d like to see it. It’s also critically important that our designated volunteers
show up on time on their scheduled days, or we’ll lose our place (and they’ll
lose $125). “Parents who fail to show
up will also have to do 8 hours of water-injection duty to ice up the training
area using a hypodermic syringe”, warned Marten.
Our recent grant from the Columbia Basin Trust was
used to purchase fencing and wireless timing equipment for the new training
area on the T-Bar. The new timing
equipment allows our coaches to easily set up accurate electronic timing
anywhere on the mountain and also can be used as a back-up system in our
official race events.
A second grant application has recently been submitted
for additional equipment.

“This is a fun wrap-up to the race season, following the Canadian
National Championships at Whistler and it will showcase some of our
nation’s most talented ski racers.”
RMR
will once again host this exciting series of GS and SL races, featuring
FIS-level (15 years and older) athletes who compete on the Mars and Hershey Cup
race series. Most athletes will be from
BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan, but we also expect to see athletes from the U.S.,
overseas countries and members of our Canadian National Team, such as Thomas
Grandi, Eric Guay, and David Anderson.
Many volunteers are needed to host such a large event,
so if you can help, please contact Kris
Tudor. We especially need some more
gate-keepers, manual timers and course workers.
