Latest Nancy Greene League News
(Two
ways to jump straight to the news you
want, or …just “Page Dn” to see all the news)
The Red
Mountain Racers, a registered non-profit society, is holding its annual general
meeting and election of officers and directors on June 5th.
All members of
Red Mountain Racers are urged to attend.
Who is a member of Red Mountain Racers, you ask? As set out in the club bylaws, all
parents of athletes registered with the club (from NGSL through to FIS) are
voting members!
Please link to
the club’s Constitution
and Bylaws on the RMR website for complete details on the purpose of the
AGM and the procedures for election of the new club executive. Any additional nominations or motions from
the general membership should be forwarded to Lin Norton
by Thursday, May 22nd.
As mentioned
below, we hope that we’ll be able to preview the NGSL video teaser before the
meeting – a follow-up notice on this will be sent out shortly.
Date: Thursday, June 5th
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall on Columbia Ave.
Over 20 people turned out for a strategic planning
meeting facilitated by Marten Kruysse and Brian Fry on April 15th. Past and present club members provided
excellent input on a wide variety of important topics, from NGSL to FIS. The meeting report and draft club
strategic plan have been posted on the RMR website in the “documents”
section.
A follow-up meeting to review a proposed cash flow
budgeting framework, a draft business plan and the existing RMR society
constitution and bylaws was held on May 13th.
In newsletters earlier this season, you’ve read about
the Red Mountain Racers Training Area project that Dave Muffly
has been leading. Dave completed
several successful grant applications to Columbia Basin Trust and along with
club president Grant Smith, Brian Fry and others, got the agreement of Red
Mountain Resorts to set up a fenced training area along the edge of Back Trail. The first grant allowed us to acquire some
new portable timing gear, fencing and other equipment. A second grant has just been approved, which
will allow us to acquire additional equipment for next season. This training area has already helped Red Mountain
attract racers from other clubs in the BC southern interior for spring
training, but it is intended mostly for use by local racers.
The second project is one that’s just a bright spark
of an idea at this time, but one that has a great deal of local/regional
support. Red Mountain Racers and Red
Mountain Resorts are working together with a local committee to capitalize on
opportunities that will be available in BC if Vancouver/Whistler wins the 2010
Winter Olympics. The group is proposing
that an International Training Centre be established at Red Mountain
that would include facilities such as snow-making, safety netting for alpine
speed events and athlete dormitories.
The idea is that the International Training Centre would be used to host
visiting snowsport athletes from across the country and across the globe,
particularly in conjunction with the 2010 Olympics. Also, the facility would enhance Red Mountain’s already
excellent reputation as a competion venue.
Stephen Hill is leading a drive for major corporate sponsorships
for this project.
The good news is that parents of “cardholder” (K1-J2)
athletes no longer have to put in their Bingo shifts. The bad news is that Bingo in the new location with no smoking
allowed did not generate the expected buckets of gold coins, so we have given
up our spot to another organization.
Sincere thanks to everyone who
contributed their time and those who made useful suggestions to improve
attendance. Trail Stingrays, Trail Youth Baseball and the Kiwanis
Club will continue with the Bingo nights.
On Sunday March 16th, there was big party to
celebrate the efforts and exploits of our Alcan NGSL skiers and boarders. We’re not quite sure whether the kids or
the coaches won the snowball fight, but Gary the clown certainly won the
entertainer contest!

The NGSL feedback form is attached to this
e-mail. If you haven’t already filled
one out, please do so and send it to Tom Gomez (Gomez@rossland.net) or Stephen Hill (hiller@septen.com). If you have already filled one out,
thanks very much for your input!
Red Mountain Racers and
additional volunteers did an amazing job of hosting the Mars Cup Spring Series
March 29 – April 1. Mens’ and women’s
races were held simultaneously for 200 athletes, including most members of the
men’s national team. The courses held
up for over 1400 runs in the 4 days.
The most exciting results from the race
series were the giant slalom wins on the Monday and Tuesday by
Rossland's own David Anderson. Tuesday's event was
David's 7th victory and his 14th podium appearance this season.
He raced mostly in North America this season, as he worked his way back to a
spot on the World Cup circuit following a season ending crash during training
at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002.
Besides being a boon to local accommodators and
restaurateurs, this high-level race series provided a fantastic opportunity for
local Red Mountain Racers Nicole Derksen, Kim Shaw, Lindsay Gilchrist,
Geoff Hatch, Colin Scoffham, Corby Carmichael, Alex Kaiser, Aaron Milburn
and Nick Smith to compete against some world class skiers right at home. (Detailed
results for all 4 days below.)

RMR’s own Kimberly Shaw qualified for and participated
in the Canadian Alpine Ski Championships at Whistler in March! Kim missed a gate in the women’s slalom, but
she completed the GS and finished 57th. It’s not every day that an athlete from our area gets to
represent her home club at the highest level of competition in the country!

here for a great slide show of photos from the National Championships,
including a few photos of David Anderson of RMR.
In March, Sasha Zaitsoff of RMR finished 1st
in the giant slalom and 4th in the slalom at the K1 (11-12 year old)
Provincials at Mt. Washington. Sasha
was also selected as the top overall K1 male racer at the Provincials.
In April, Sasha skied for “Team BC” and Canada at the
Whistler Cup. The Whistler Cup is an
annual FIS-sanctioned, international race event for the top juvenile racers in
the world. Sasha was the second fastest
Canadian K1 male in the GS, finishing in 15th position!! Well done, Sasha!
At the end of March, Alex Cameron travelled to Jasper
for the K2 (12-13 year old) Western Canadian Championships. On the first day, Alex finished 5th
in the Super-G! On day 2, Alex broke
her thumb in the GS, but on day 3, she rebounded with a 6th place
finish in the SL anyway! Way to hang in
there, Alex!

The CIBC Wood Gundy Kootenay Zone
Finals were held April 12th and 13th at Panorama and the Red Mountain Racers
came up with some huge results. A giant
slalom race was held on Saturday under clear skies with perfect rock-hard
conditions on the first run. On
Sunday, an exciting dual slalom race was held on soft spring snow. Jessie Carmichael swept the 13-14 year old
women's Giant Slalom AND Slalom races, while Geoff Hatch also scored a double
victory in the junior men's category. Sasha
Zaitsoff won the 11-12 year old men's slalom and Alexandra Cameron, Kim Shaw,
Jake Muffly, Keith Muffly and Dane Tudor-Olds also found the medalists' podium
on the weekend. The zone finals mark
the end of a very successful season for the Red Mountain Racers.
