The Red Mountain Racers and Rossland Secondary School have long been searching for a solution to our athletes missing classes, half days, and full days from school. RSS is committed to continuing to offer our athletes an opportunity to train more, while helping them manage and complete their schooling.

For 2005/06, RSS, Red Mountain Racers and Red Resort, with support through financial bursaries from Redstone Resort, took this program to the next level. Student athletes were able to enroll in a special program with a course timetable specifically tailored to account for their need for training and competition time. The classroom timetable was supplemented with online learning modules as needed. Athletes committed to both their sport training and academic performance were able to train on snow up to 5 days per week. In its first year of operation, the Ski Academy program had 12 local and 5 out-of-district students enrolled.

For 2006/07, a new academic year at the Academy is underway, with local and international students participating in expanded and more flexible 10 month or 5 month programs. Students from other provinces and countries have been welcomed to Rossland Secondary School, Red Mountain Racers and the community of Rossland. Details on the new program are available at www.redskiacademy.com. Several new features included in this year's program are transportation by van to and from the ski hill and sessions on sport nutrition and sport pyschology. Students can still register to join the 2006/07 academy program at any time! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact Sean Valentine (362-9010).
